It is now 3 weeks into the restarted Network Rail Inquiry into Crossings.
The main players, Network Rail, Essex County Council and The Ramblers, have all made their position statements. Network Rail provided the bulk of that and their representatives were cross examined in considerable detail. For the Ramblers Derrick de Moor gave evidence on the needs and benefits of walking and John Russell on road walking and traffic safety measures. The Ramblers barrister, Merrow Golding, has done a great job in identifying confusion between Network Rail representatives, and the failure to view diversions from walkers perception. Gordon Bird Essex Area Chair, who will be acting as witness for the majority of crossings, continues to act as overseer in chief in our efforts, and Katherine Evans, Area Footpath Secretary, has raised a number of points of detail, which have caused Network Rail to rethink. All three are doing a great job of fighting for Essex Groups rights of way.
The Inquiry has now reached the stage where evidence is given in detail for each crossing, by Area Footpath Secretaries, and a cross examination by Network Rail's barrister will take place.
Network Rail have 8/10 highly paid legal personnel, and Managers watching and ready to disagree with our evidence. Ramblers have a barrister, and 2/3 unpaid Area Executive Committee members present.
Your attendance would be really helpful to support the Footpath Secretaries, but also for everyone to see and pass the message on as to what Network Rail feel about and react to the efforts being made on Groups behalf.
