Essex and Herts Long Distance Walkers Association
The 22nd Blackwater Marathon – Saturday 28th October
Three Distances - 26.2 miles, 18.5 miles or 13.5 miles
The biannual Blackwater Marathon, organised by the Essex and Herts Group of the Long Distance Walkers Association, is being held on Saturday 28th October starting from Heybridge Primary School, Rowan Drive, Heybridge. This Challenge Walk is primarily for walkers, but runners are also welcome. The charge is £8 for LDWA members and £10 for non members.
No entries are allowed on the day of the event. Entries close on Saturday 21st of October, or earlier if the entry limit of 200 is reached. Online Entry and Entry Forms giving full details and the rules of the event, can be downloaded from the Essex and Herts LDWA website www.ldwa.org.uk/essexandherts (Tel. Contact 01787 460181).
This is not a race. The LDWA is not concerned with competitive race walking but encourages the concept of a ‘personal challenge’ on its events. The object is to complete 26.2, 18.5 or 13.5 miles on foot within the given time limit following a route description which will be provided two weeks before the event. The maximum times allowed for walkers are 9 ½ hours for the marathon route and 8 ½ hours for the 18 mile and 13 mile route. Certificates will be given to all who complete their chosen distance within the time limit.
Drinks and snacks will be provided at three checkpoints on the Marathon route, two on the 18 mile route and one on the 13 mile route. There will be a snack meal and drinks at the finish.
The routes will be mainly on cross-country public footpaths including sections of the sea wall. All routes pass through Goldhanger, the 18 mile and Marathon routes pass through Tolleshunt D’Arcy, with the Marathon route having an extra loop through Tollesbury.
Other information regarding our varied programme of Social Walks can also be found on our website - address above. You are very welcome to try out a couple of our Social Walks before joining the LDWA.
